Abstract

1375326 Modified polyolefins SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 13 Sept 1972 [14 Sept 1971 2 Feb 1972] 42589/72 Heading C3P Modified polyolefins are prepared by reacting (1) a crystalline polyolefin, (2) 0À1 to 10 weight per cent of an unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof and (3) (a) 0À1 to 20 weight per cent of at least one of magnesium, calcium, titanium and zirconium hydroxides and/or (b) 0À1 to 80 weight per cent of at least one of the oxides, carbonates and sulphates of Group II(a), III(a) and IV(b) metals, at a temperature above the melting point of the polyolefin. The polyolefin may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1 or a random or block ethylene/propylene or ethylene/butene copolymer. The carboxylic material may be maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, crotonic, isocrotonic, mesaconic, angelic, methacrylic or acrylic acid, or maleic, itaconic or citraconic anhydride. Specified metal compounds are magnesium, calcium and zirconium hydroxides and ortho-titanic acid; magnesium, calcium, aluminium and titanium oxides; magnesium and calcium carbonates; and magnesium, calcium and aluminium sulphates. The products have improved adhesion to metals, paper, wood, textiles and plastics. Examples describe the reaction of polypropylene with maleic anhydride and (1) magnesium and calcium hydroxides and orthotitanic acid, (4) magnesium carbonate, and (6) magnesium, titanium and aluminium oxides, calcium carbonate, and barium, magnesium and calcium sulphates; of polypropylene with magnesium oxide and (5) maleic acid, itaconic acid and itaconic anhydride; and of polyethylene with maleic anhydride and (2) magnesium, calcium and zirconium hydroxides and orthotitanic acid, (3 and 8) magnesium oxide, and (7) magnesium, titanium and aluminium oxides and magnesium and calcium carbonates. The products are stabilized with 2,6-di-t.butyl-pcresol and (8) mixed with phthalocyanine blue, and used for coating aluminium and steel panels.
