Abstract

1374925 Dihydroxyphenylbenzyl ketone derivatives CHINOIN GYOGYSZER ES VEGYESZETI TERMEKEK GYARA RT 30 Nov 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 55371/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Novel compounds I (in which R 1 and R 2 each represents H or an alkyl group optionally substituted by phenyl, halophenyl, sulphophenyl, OH or alkoxy, with the proviso that if R 2 is H, R 1 is not CH 3 , C 2 H 5 or C 6 R 5 CH 2 and if R 2 is CH 3 , R 1 is not H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 ), and their salts are prepared by (1) conversion, by methods known per se, of one or both nuclear OH groups in a compound II (in which R 1 <SP>1</SP> and R 2 <SP>1</SP> are as defined for R 1 and R 2 except that at least one must be H), into R 1 O or R 2 O groups; (2) partial desalkylation of a compound IIA (in which R 1 <SP>11</SP> and R 2 <SP>11</SP> are optionally substituted alkyl groups), to give a compound I in which one of R 1 and R 2 is H and the other is not H; (3) reacting a compound III with benzyl cyanide, phenacetyl chloride or phenylacetic acid in aprotic solvents in the presence of an acidic catalyst, a Lewis acid or BF 3 respectively; (4) subjecting a compound IIIA (in which one of R 1 <SP>1</SP> and R 2 <SP>1</SP> is as defined for R 1 and R 2 and the other is phenacetyl) to Fries rearrangement in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst or light irradiation; (5) oxidation of a chalcone IV with a thallium (III) salt in a primary alcoholic medium and reacting the product V (in which R 3 is 1-6C alkyl), with an acid; or (6) treating a compound VI, VII or VIII (R 1 in compound VII is alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl or carboxy), with a base. The compounds I may be converted to their 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine derivatives by conventional methods.
