Abstract

1374630 Forming vitreous layers PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Dec 1972 [28 Dec 1971] 59634/72 Heading C1M A surface (e.g. glass plate 1 or 2) is covered with a vitreous layer 12 of substantially uniform thickness, by depositing a layer 6 of powdered vitreous material by sedimentation for at least 8 hours from a binder-free suspension 11 of the powder in an organic liquid, removing the liquid (e.g. by syphon device 10), drying the layer of powder, fusing the powder layer, and allowing the molten material to cool and solidify to form the vitreous layer 12. The organic liquid preferably has a dielectric constant of more than 20, e.g. methanol, ethanol or acetone. The vitreous material, which preferably is of particle size below 16 Ám., may consist of, in weight percent, B2O3 16, ZnO 4 and PbO 80. The final vitreous layer 12 is preferably 20-100 Ám thick. Metal conductors 4, 5 may be embedded in the vitreous layer 12 of the insulating glass plates 1, 2 (Fig. 4, not shown). Insulating plates 1 and 2 may then be assembled, with intermediate plate 3, to form a gas discharge picture display panel having cavities 7, 8 therein.
