Abstract

1374564 Electro-photography INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 23 March 1973 [12 April 1972] 14055/73 Heading G2H In an electro-photographic apparatus of the kind in which a supported document to be copied is illuminated and an image of the illuminated document is used to expose a rotating charged photo-conductor drum 10, the illumination and exposure means is selectively operable to redirect the light therefrom to illuminate the drum 10 whilst excluding the document 22 from receiving the light. The document is scanned by an illumination assembly carrying a lamp 16 housed in a parabolic reflector 18, and two mirrors 20, 26, and which assembly is driven from left to right (as observed in Fig. 4), while mirrors 28, 30 are traversed at half the speed, a fixed lens and mirror 32 focussing a narrow band of reflected light on to the drum 10 through a slit. Une of tow control stops (52 or 54) is selected according to whether an 11" or 14" document is to be copied and the stop (52 or 54) selected actuates a cam lever (48) connected to an arm 46 carrying a shutter 42 to cause the shutter 42 to move across so as to screen the document support 22 and reflect the light straight back via the mirror lens system to the drum 10. The electrostatic charge on the drum 10 is thus discharged beyond the line corresponding to the end of the document being copied, thus preventing unwanted pick up of developer toner by the drum 10.
