Abstract

1373915 Hydraulic braking systems GIRLING Ltd 11 July 1972 [30 July 1971] 35839/71 Heading F2F An hydraulic braking system for a vehicle comprises a pedal operated tandem master cylinder 1 whose pressure spaces are connected respectively to one of a pair of master cylinder assemblies 3, 5 for simultaneous actuation thereof, and each master cylinder assembly 3, 5 is adapted to regulate the supply of fluid under pressure from respective hydraulic accumulators 6, 7 (Fig. 1) or a single hydraulic accumulator 23 (Fig. 2) to one or more of the hydraulic actuators of the front and/or rear wheel brakes 8, 9 and 19, 20. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the assembly 3 is adapted to supply fluid to actuators 10 on both front wheel brakes 8, 9 and the assembly 5 is adapted to supply fluid to both actuators 11 on the brakes 8, 9. Hydraulic actuators 17, 18 of the rear wheel brakes 19, 20 are respectively connected with the pressure spaces of the master cylinder 1 for direct actuation when the master cylinder 1 is operated. The accumulators 6, 7 are supplied with fluid under pressure by a pump 14 and a reservoir 15 has a return line 16 connected to assemblies 3, 5. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the assembly 3 is adapted to supply fluid under pressure to the actuator 17 of rear wheel brake 19 and fluid from the first pressure space in the tandem master cylinder 1 is supplied to each actuator 10 of the front wheel brakes 8, 9.
