Abstract

1372903 Offshore storage tanks CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO 7 Nov 1972 [16 Feb 1972] 51274/72 Heading E1H An offshore oil storage tank comprises a reinforced concrete base 14 and a cylindrical steel shell 11 extending above sea level, the liquid level within the tank being maintained above a sufficient level (e.g. by introducing sea water) to restrain any movement of the tank or its collapse in stormy conditions. The base 14 is cased in steel and has a ground-penetrating skirt 16, and the shell 11 which is made of a plurality of horizontal rings, has stiffening members 15. The tank has a floating roof 19 guided by a ring 18. The tank is floated into position and sunk by pumping in water via inlet 24, the level of water being determined by the position of the outlet end 22 of a discharge pipe 20. Oil is then introduced via pipe 23 and simultaneously raises the roof 19 and displaces water via pipe 20. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the tank has a fixed domed roof with a vent at its highest point.
