Abstract

Clutches, friction.-In hydraulically-operated plate and cone clutches, a continuous flow of liquid takes place between the frictional surfaces during the engaging movement of the clutch parts. Liquid is supplied by a pump through a channel F to the outer sides of plates C turning with a casing A secured on the driven shaft B and presses them into engagement. with a. central disk D on the driving-shaft E. The liquid escapes past the friction surfaces and enters a return channel G until full engagement takes place, when the flow ceases. To disengage the clutch, the direction of flow is reversed, the fluid entering by the channel G and returning by the channel F. Light engaging-springs P may be used, in which case a continuous disengaging-flow is required while the parts are running free. A double-acting cone clutch also is described, the liquid being supplied through one shaft to the space between the central cones, which are pressed apart for engagement, the liquid escaping past the clutch surfaces and passing away through the other shaft. An automatic release valve is provided on the delivery pipe from the pump.
