Abstract

1371337 Making articles by winding SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Oct 1971 [4 Dec 1970] 57606/70 Heading B8G A method of forming an article of, or coating an article with, thermoplastic material comprises the steps of sequentially forming on a mould or an article to be coated, a first layer of thermoplastic material, a layer of fibrous material and a second layer of thermoplastic material, each layer being formed by wrapping around the mould or article material in strip form with adjacent turns of the material overlapping one another, providing an external support for the second layer of thermoplastic material so as to apply a substantially uniform pressure to the whole of the external surface of the said second layer, heating the thermoplastic material to cause the surface of the thermoplastic material to become tacky so as to bond together adjacent turns of each layer of thermoplastic material, and then removing the said external support. The thermoplastic material is of a kind which does not adopt a liquid state when heated, for example polytetrafluoroethylene. The external support may comprise a layer of heat-resistant material in strip form which is wrapped around the second layer of thermoplastic material with adjacent turns of the heatresistant material overlapping one another. Alternatively said external support comprises a mould which extends around the second layer or the support is provided by fluid under pressure. The invention is particularly applicable to the formation of a bellows, the description showing a central core made out of a plurality of sections 10, 11, the core being collapsed when no longer required by first withdrawing the section 10 axially and then moving the sections 11 radially inwards and withdrawing them axially.
