Abstract

1371327 Air rectification process BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 5 Oct 1971 [12 Oct 1970] 48402/70 Heading F4P A compressed air separation process for the production of krypton and xenon-rich liquid oxygen comprises withdrawing at 25 krypton, xenon and methane containing gaseous oxygen from the vicinity of the reboiler 12 separating the low and high pressure stages 19, 15 of a double column 16, and after absorbing acetylene at 22 passing the withdrawn mixture to the midpoint of a further rectification column 23 having a reboiler 28 at the base thereof and being provided with reflux of such vapour/liquid ratio that substantially all the krypton and xenon but not the methane is removed from the ascending vapour, withdrawing methane containing gaseous oxygen from the head of column 23 and withdrawing product krypton and xenon- rich liquid oxygen from the base. Reflux for column 23 is obtained by warming at 32 a portion of the withdrawn gaseous oxygen, compressing it at 34, re-cooling at 32 and in the reboiler 28 and then valve-expanding into the head of column 23. Instead of oxygen, air or nitrogen may be condensed and used as reflux. A minor portion of feed air leaving a compressor 10 and having been cooled in a reversing exchanger 12 is turbine-expanded at 18 to provide cold for the low pressure column 19.
