Abstract

1370990 Air purifying system CENTRALSUG AB 29 Dec 1972 [30 Dec 1971] 60011/72 Headings B1L and BIT Air withdrawn from a refuse suction system is discharged through a duct which is bridged by a wall 2 having one or more apertures, with disposable coarse and fine particle filters 3, 5 upstream of each aperture and active carbon filters 11 downstream. As shown two carbon filters 11 are arranged one above the other, and each comprises a zig-zag array of flat, hollow, porous plates open at the top for feeding fresh carbon in and at the bottom for discharging spent carbon. Each plate comprises a plurality of flat-section tubes stuck together edgewise, and tubes in the upper and lower filters 11 are aligned. The lower end of the carbon filter assembly opens into valved discharged hopper 14, 15, which is kept filled, and the upper end is sealed to a plate 10 having slots aligned with the hollow plates. Plate 10 is kept covered with carbon, and the tops of plates (Fig. 4, not shown) are extended by impervious portions providing a greater height of carbon than the plate thickness. A vibrator 12 assists compacting and discharge of the carbon. Wall 2 is provided with a by-pass door 8, and the duct has access doors (Fig. 3, not shown) upstream and downstream of the filters. Particle filters 3, 5 are vertically stacked, and carbon filters 11 are reinforced by support bars 9. An air blower is arranged upstream or downstream. To save carbon when the plates are first filled, the lower part of hopper 14 may be filled with clay particles. When wall 2 has several apertures these may have individual closures so that their respective filters may be removed and filtering proceeds through the others.
