Abstract

1370700 Corrugating tubes GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [18 March 1972] 12778/72 Heading B3E Transverse corrugations are formed in a tubular blank 44, e.g. for a jacket for a collapsible steering shaft on a vehicle, by registering the blank on a collapsible segmental mandrel 10 and passing it through a die assembly 12 comprising a ring of toothed wheels 14 rotatably mounted on a common holder 16 with their axes disposed in a common radial plane, and therafter collap- sing the mandrel to permit removal of the corrugated blank. As shown, the mandrel comprises eight corrugated segments 20 surrounding a plug 22 slidable in a bush 26 in a fixed housing 24, the segments having flanges 32 radially movable in a groove 34 in the housing, and being urged together by a spring retainer 30. The plug has larger and smaller diameter portions 28 and 36, which are alternatively locatable within the segments to impart an extended and a collapsed configuration to the mandrel. Eight wheels 14 are mounted in the holder 16, each registering with a mandrel segment 20, and the wheel teeth have concave crests matching the convex crests on the mandrel segment corrugations 18. Spring ball detents 40 index the wheels prior to engagement of the wheels with the segments when the assembly 12 is moved up over the blank (through the blank may be moved through the assembly). Prior to corrugating, a tubular blank may have its end portions reduced in diameter to provide portions on which bearings or tube extensions are to be fitted, these end portions being connected by shoulders to a central larger diameter portion to be corrugated. The blank is placed over the collapsed mandrel which is then expanded within the central portion. The resulting corrugated tube has longitudinal ribs corresponding to the gaps between adjacent wheels and between adjacent mandrel segments when expanded. The wheels 14 may be movable together radially of the holder during corrugating, e.g. by a cam mechanism, to vary the characteristics of the corrugations.
