1370312 Rotary conveyers T E BERGENS 1 Sept 1971 [10 June 1971] 40737/71 Heading B8A [Also in Division El] Apparatus for handling material comprises rotary shafts with substantially radial arms and spaced apart so that on rotation of adjacent shafts their arms can conjointly engage material and convey it transversely to the shafts, there being two or more trains of shafts arranged side-by-side and spaced apart so that arms of adjacent trains, on contra-rotation, substantially meet or overlap so as conjointly to form material-entraining spaces. The material may comprise solid bodies, bulk material, jelly products or liquids and may be conveyed or stored during the handling. In Fig. 1, logs are transported downwards by arms 2 secured on trains T1, T2 of shafts 1. When the shafts of the two trains are staggered, Fig. 2 (not shown), the logs may be conveyed up or down. By adding a further train (T3) of shafts, Fig. 5 (not shown), two transport channels are formed for conveying in opposite directions. In Fig. 6, shafts A, B, C are separately controllable so that articles fed by a conveyer train T4 may be transported by trains T5, T6 or T7. For handling bulk material, the arms 2 comprise blades or paddles extending along each shaft, Figs. 7a, 7b, and the edges of the arms wipe closely over the arms on adjacent shafts such that closed entraining spaces are formed in succession along the conveying path. In Fig. 8 (not shown) an arrangement similar to that in Fig. 7, performs a digging as well as a conveying action (Division E1).
