Abstract

1370010 Super-conductors THOMSONBRANDT 21 Dec 1971 [23 Dec 1970] 59489/71 Headings H1A and A4D A super-conductive conductor is made by forming a tubular covering 2 of fine super-conductive wires about a core 5 of material which is a good conductor of heat and electricity and is ductile; the super-conductive wires each has a sheath of the same material. Heated cladding elements 6, 7, 8, 9 at a temperature of 400 to 800‹C are then rolled on to the core to form an integral structure with embedded super-conductive elements as shown in Fig. 3. The tubular covering may be formed by helical winding possibly in a number of layers with adjacent layers wound in opposite directions; alternatively the super-conductive elements are braided about the core. In a further form the core comprises a flattened tube, the inner surfaces of which are treated to prevent bonding during rolling. The core is then inflated by a liquid to produce a hollow conductor as shown in Fig. 5. The superconductive material may be NbTi and the core and cladding may be copper, aluminium, brass, bronze, nickel, silver or stainless steel.
