Abstract

1369458 Ceramic seals INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd 12 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 58158/71 Heading B3V [Also in Division C1] In joining ferrite polepieces 1, 2 (e.g. in forming a magnetic transducing head), vitreous material 3 is placed in the gap between the pieces and heated to allow the vitreous material to assume a fluid state and fill the gap, the pressure of the inert surrounding atmosphere then being cyclically varied between upper and lower limits to cause migration of occluded gas through the still-fluid vitreous material away from the ferrite. The glass may be a lead borate or lead borosilicate glass, examples of which are given. The pressure may be varied between 0À1 torr and 1 atmosphere, each cycle taking, e.g. 12 sees. The glass-bonded ferrite assembly may subsequently be encapsulated with a second vitreous material of lower softening temperature, so that the second material may be subjected to a similar cyclic pressure variation without softening the first vitreous material.
