Abstract

1368813 Card reader REVENUE SYSTEMS Ltd 14 Nov 1972 [16 Nov 1971] 53127/71 Heading G4M A card reader has an entry slot and a stop preventing passage of a card unless a card of a predetermined minimum width is inserted. The slot A has, at either side, rollers G carried on spring arms H. A tray C having a sloping front edge is held in a position obstructing entry of a card by pins K engaging in holes J in the arms. A card of the required width separates the rollers sufficiently to release the pins from the holes and the tray is moved downward by the pressure of the card on the sloping edge. The card is pushed under roller M until the leading edge reaches roller N. The tray C operates micro switch E to actuate electromagnet AD so that roller Q rotating in the direction shown is pressed against roller 0. The card is nipped between rollers N, O and advanced on to a spring-loaded slide (not shown) on a platen AF. Micro switch E via a delay mechanism operates electromagnet AG which via linkages and spring AM operates lever AK to move the slide to the right to abut shoulder AN. A pin AJ slidable in a slot in lever AH is engaged by the end of the slot to raise the platen against a read head via links AT, AU. When magnet AG is energized, AD is deenergized and AE is energized so that roller 0 rotates in the opposite direction. After reading and possibly writing is complete AG is deenergized and the card is ejected from the machine. Rollers AQ are carried by arms H so that the arms may be moved apart on the passage of the card.
