As shown a conical zinc tip 1 forms the anode which is separated by insulation 2 from a hollow brass cathode 3 which is joined directly to a tubular metal stem 4. The stem is preferably of a smaller diameter than the top of the electrode so that the electrode contact area is reasonably well defined. The stem may be coated with insulation.
