Abstract

1368597 Piston rings A STRAZDINS 22 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29826/72 Heading F2T In piston packing comprising a ring 8 housed in a groove 6 in the piston 4 and an 0-ring 7 compressed between the ring 8 and the bottom of the groove, the ring 8 has a step 11 in its outer peripheral surface defining a scraping edge 12 lying in a plane which is parallel to the plane 13 containing the 0-ring axis 14 and intersects the contact interface 10 between the 0-ring 7 and the ring 8. Preferably, as shown, the scraping edge 12 lies in the plane 13. A second step 16 is formed in the ring 8 and the 0-ring 7 is located by a spacer ring 15. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the step 16 and ring 15 are omitted. The ring 8 may be made of nylon or plastics, e.g. P.T.F.E., and it may be applied by stretching or by heating to expand it, followed by water cooling when in position. Alternatively, the ring may be split.
