Abstract

1368022 Evaporators; recovery of iron oxide from acid pickle liquors; gas filter ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY Inc 24 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971 29 July 1971] 3216/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] Iron oxide is obtained from an acid solution of iron sulphate or iron chloride, e.g. acid pickle liquor, by distributing through nozzle 108 and/or duet 112 on to a compact bed of inert solid particles (e.g. an iron oxide mill scale) moving down the inclined floor 20 of refractory-lined chamber 12 while hot gases from burner 14 pass upwards over the bed, evaporating water and free acid and oxidizing the iron salt to iron oxide. The solids leave the lower end of the chamber through duct 78, and may be submitted to delumping (Fig. 4, not shown) before being recirculated to hopper 98. The floor 20 of the chamber is layered; and I-beams 34 support a honeycombed layer 42 of stainless steel on which is mounted platform 44 having spaced ribs (Fig. 3, not shown). The floor may be vibrated by vibrator 116. The inclination of the chamber can be adjusted by screw jack 28. The depth of the compact bed on platform 44 is preferably 1 to 4 inches. By adjusting the position of nozzle 108, the feed liquor may have sufficient contact with the hot gases to undergo concentration by evaporation before it contacts the compact bed. The gases leave the upper end of the chamber through outlet 16 containing steel-mesh filter basket 86 which is shaken by vibrator 84. The hot effluent gases may be contacted with fresh feed liquor to preheat it, and may then be contacted with water for acid recovery. Basket 86 may include a catalyst, e.g. V2O5 for the conversion of SO2 to SO3. The specification also refers to the treatment of municipal sewage and waste liquors from the paper and cellulose industries. In these applications, sand or carbon may be used for the compact bed.
