Abstract

1367632 Vices RABONE CHESTERMAN Ltd 28 Sept 1971 [21 July 1970 22 Oct 1970] 35311/70 and 50253/70 Heading B3B [Also in Divisions F2 B4 and B8] In a screw and "half-nut" mechanism, a screw 10 is mounted in a cylindrical bore 12 and is engaged by a threaded end of a cylindrical plunger 16 slidably mounted in a cylindrical bore 18 having an axis inclined relative to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the screw. The arrangement is such that when the screw is tightened, the thrust which it exerts on the half-nut produces a tendency for the latter to be crowded into engagement with the screw. The screw may have a buttress thread or a square thread. For quick release, the plunger 16 is moved axially out of engagement with the screw. In a screw cramp, quick release of a spring-pressed plunger is obtained by operating a button 42, Fig. 4. A similar arrangement is employed in a woodworkers vice. In a metal workers vice, a half-nut is held in engagment with a screw by a shaft 150 which may be rotated to a position in which a flat 152 on the shaft 150 allows the half-nut to move out of engagement with the screw.
