Abstract
1367490 Microporous collagen coating J DAVIDOVITS 14 Sept 1971 [15 Sept 1970] 42795/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A microporous product consisting of single molecules of denatured collagen with an average M.W. of 50,000-150,000 and, optionally, at least one other high polymer, may be prepared by treating a collagenic substance with a strong mineral acid at temperatures of up to 85‹C to obtain the above specified denatured collagen in acidic solution and precipitating the denatured collagen on a support by neutralising the acidic solution with a strong base. It is preferred to apply a coating of the polymeric material to a substrate prior to neutralising. The combined structures produced may be used as substitutes for leather. The other high polymer, which should dissolve in the acidic medium and precipitate with the collagen when the medium is neutralised, may be a linear polyamide (polyamide-6 and polyamide-66), a linear polyester, cellulose triacetate, polyacrylonitrile, or a linear or crosslinked polyurethane, amounting to between 20 and 80% of the combined weight of the collagenic polymer and the other high polymer. The collagenic substance may be collagen itself, collagenic fibres, gelatine, calf or ox skin. tanned collagen or chromed leather, and the support may be a paper, cardboard, natural or man-made textile (specified) or leather substrate. Examples 3 to 6 disclose the preparation of a microporous polymeric product upon substrates composed of cotton, knitted fabrics made of cellulose triacetate or brushed rayon, and non-woven cellulosic fabric (or paper), respectively. In certain cases an adhesion coating was first applied. The polymeric material consisted of an acidic colloidal polyamido-collagenic solution obtained from polyamide-6 and chromed leather shavings. The solution included a plasticizer (specified).
