Abstract

1367102 Removing phosphorus from iron ores AUSTRALIAN MINERAL DEVELOPMENT LABORATORIES 10 Nov 1971 [11 Nov 1970 13 Aug 1971] 52118/71 Heading C1A Phosphorus may be removed from iron ores by heating to 1000-1300‹ C., thus concentrating the phosphorus in certain areas, and removing the phosphorus, suitably by leading, the purified ore being then washed and dried. The leaching agent may be a mineral acid used at below 70‹ C., e.g. HCl or H2SO4 (preferably 0À5 N), which can be recovered by heating to 70-150‹ C. in order to precipitate out ferric phosphate and the acid recycled. The leaching agent may also be alkali, e.g. NaOH or Na2CO3. Caustic soda may also be recycled by adding lime to precipitate out the P. The process may be used with lump, ground and pelleted or sintered ores, leaching times of 1-5 hours being typically used. Examples show the effect of varying the leaching agent, its concentration, temperature and washing time and the solubility of Fe in 0À5 N H2SO4.
