Abstract
1367074 Pipe repair apparatus D McKNIGHT 19 Aug 1971 [20 May 1970] 24451/70 Heading F2P Apparatus for blocking flow in a fluid carrying pipe includes an air lock chamber 12 having a tool entry passageway 13 on one side with a sealing gland 14 for co-operation with the shank 15 of a tool (e.g. a cutting tool 41), a flow control valve 16 on the opposite side and operable (by a handle 20, Fig. 2, not shown) between a closed position and an open position permitting entry of a tool therethrough, and means for clamping the device to a pipe 10 in a sealing tight manner with the surface of the pipe, whereby a cutting tool 41 may be inserted through the device to form an opening in the pipe wall, the apparatus further including a tube 52 having a bladder 50 at one end for insertion through the device into the pipe and a plunger 56 working in said tube to permit fluid in the tube to be driven into the bladder to inflate it into sealing engagement with the pipe 10. In use the chamber 12 is clamped to the pipe 10 by a band 24 and an interchangeable seal 22. The cutting tool 41 is screwed into the device and used to cut an opening in the pipe wall. Stop means are provided to limit the movement of tool 41. The tool 41 is partially withdrawn and valve 16 closed to prevent escape of fluid and the tool 41 removed. The tube and bladder device is then inserted and the bladder inflated to stop flow in the pipe. If there is no back pressure work on the pipe downstream of the bladder can then be carried out, alternatively, if there is a back pressure another bladder is inserted further along the pipe to isolate a section thereof. After the work on the pipe section has been completed the bladder (or bladders) is withdrawn and a tool with a detachable plug (63) (Fig. 4, not shown) inserted through the device to insert the plug in the opening in the pipe wall.
