Abstract

1366931 I-Dihydrocodeine MACFARLAN SMITH Ltd 10 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971 27 Aug 1971] 5081/71 and 40245/71 Heading C2C Purified 1-dihydrocodeine is obtained by (a) catalytically hydrogenating 1-dihydrocodeinone in a liquid medium using a platinum oxide or supported platinum metal catalyst (and optionally in the presence of a base) to produce a solution of crude 1-dihydrocodeine, (b) removing the catalyst from the solution and either (i) passing the solution of the crude 1-dihydrocodeine through an anion exchange resin of quaternary ammonium type in the hydroxide form, or (ii) isolating the crude 1-dihydrocodeine, dissolving the crude 1-dihydrocodeine in a waterimmiscible solvent and extracting the resulting solution with aqueous alkali, and recovering the purified 1-dihydrocodeine, if desired, in salt form, e.g. tartrate.
