Abstract

1366877 Reduction of valency UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 15 Nov 1971 [24 Nov 1970] 55943/70 Heading C7B A liquid-liquid contactor comprises an electro-chemical cell 10 having a bed 20 of particles at least in part of conducting material arranged so that mixed liquid phases flow through the bed. The mixed phases are subjected to electrolysis whereby one of the reactants is electro-chemically reduced and its extraction from one phase to the other is facilitated. Uranium and plutonium in an organic phase may be separated by reducing Pu<SP>IV</SP> to the aqueous soluble Pu<SP>III</SP>. The liquid phases enter mixer compartment 11 through inlets 13 and 14 and are forced to flow upwards into the cell through gauze 19 by action of the paddle 12. The bed 20 forms the cathode and the fire-brick cylinder 17 contains the platinum anode 18. The mixed phases leave the cell through outlet 15 into a settler unit. The particles may be solid metal, or glass beads coated with gold palladium or copper, or silicon carbide particles coated with carbon. Specification No. 1264921 is referred to.
