Abstract
1366542 Differential and reverse gear DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 27 Jan 1972 [1 Feb 1971] 3566/71 Heading F2D A drive mechanism which has three coaxial rotatable elements 2, 3, 4, similar in function to those of a three element planet train, for use as a differential or reverse gear, comprises an inner member having at least two or three equally phased cams 2 (e.g. eccentrics) side-by-side; an outer member 3 with complementary cams; and an intermediate member 4 carrying caged slippers, balls or rollers 5c, 5d, two for each riser of each cam, and in addition close-fitting end plates, associated with the outer member only, or with both inner and outer members, are provided at each end of each cam, and ports therein communicate with the cyclically varying spaces between the cams and followers. These spaces are used to pump liquid which may be controlled by a valve (78, Fig. 6a, not shown), to provide a controlled resistance to relative movement and hence a limited slip characteristic. The end plates may be formed as two registering parts secured to the respective inner and outer members. When used as a reverse gear the control valve may provide the lock-up direct drive, the cage being held for reverse. As a differential gear the cage 4 carries an input crown wheel and the inner and outer members 2, 3 are splined to vehicle axle shafts. In Fig. 4, not shown, both cam members are elliptical, having two risers and two pairs of rollers. In Figs. 3a and 3b simple ball races are arranged between either or both cams and the members supporting them.
