1365826 Labelling PRICEMASTER Ltd 7 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 22437/72 Heading B8F In a labelling machine in which a labelbearing strip 15 is drawn from a supply reel 14, passed around a small radius label-stripping roller 34 adjacent a label applicator plate 40, and rewound on a collector reel 16 rotatably driven through a usi-directional friction clutch 17 by a reciprocable slide 27, a guide roller 38 is mounted on the slide 27 for cyclically shortening and lengthening the path of the strip between the stripping roller and collector reel such that during lengthening, a fresh length of strip is drawn from the supply reel and a label stripped by the roller 34, and, during shortening, a corresponding spent strip length is taken-up upon the collector reel. As shown, the machine is a hand-held dispenser, and the slide is moved to the right against the bias of a spring 24 on squeezing of a trigger 25 to effect shortening of the path between the roller 34 and collector reel. Simultaneously, a stud 22 on the slide rotates a lug 19 of the collector reel clutch to effect takeup of a length of spent strip whilst draw-off from the supply reel is prevented by a pawl 31 clamping the strip against a fixed plate 29. On release of the trigger, the slide is moved to the left by the spring 24 to draw off a new strip length from the supply reel and effect stripping of a label from the strip as it is drawn about the roller 34. The one-way clutch resists unwinding of strip from the collector reel during leftwards slide movement. During the rightwards movement of the slide, an inking roller 56 thereon wipes the characters of a manually-settable band printer 50, which is subsequently moved downwardly to print a label positioned on a platen 43 on continued rightwards slide movement, the printer being depressed by a slide pin 58 engaging a pivoted cranked lever 52. The printed, stripped label is received between cranked wire supports 45 and the ribbed end of the applicator plate. In modifications, (a) the machine may be power-operated. (b) The guide roller 38 and a resilient strip tensioner 35 may be replaced by a neoprene guide roller. (c) The pivoted applicator plate may be replaced by a fixed plastics plate. (d) The guide roller 38 and tensioner 35 may be replaced by a rotary member having a diametrical channel or a pair of diametrical extensions to effect shortening and lengthening of the strip path between the stripping roller and the collector reel as said member is rotatablyoscillated by a gear in engagement with a rack on the slide.
