Abstract

1365784 Silica W R GRACE & CO 26 Sept 1972 [29 Sept 1971] 44474/72 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Loosely aggregated silica particles with sizes of 0À5 to 5 microns are made by first treating a silica hydrogel with an organic liquid to replace at least 85% of the water in the hydrogel with the organic liquid and then concurrently drying and deagglomerating the porous silica so produced in a fluid energy mill. Replacement of the water may be effected by (1) mixing the hydrogel with a water-miscible organic liquid and then removing the excess organic liquid containing water or (2) azeotropically distilling the hydrogel with the organic liquid. A watenmiscible organic liquid in the gel may be replaced by a water-immiscible organic liquid.
