1365678 Filter bed W E HOPE and M J HOPE 23 Dec 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 45785/70 Heading BID Effluent water or other liquid is filtered downwards through a sand bed contained between gratings 5 and 7, and clean sand is continuously fed to the bed by means 2, contaminated sand and filtered solids being continuously removed from above grating 5 by endless scraper conveyor 3. Grating 7 is of wedge wire, woven wire or perforate plastics with apertures fine enough to retain the sand, while grating 5 has larger apertures to allow upward passage of sand therethrough. Means 2 comprises a worm feeding sand into perforate pipe A. Spreader 4 spreads incoming liquid from pipes 9 over the whole bed area.
