Abstract

1365396 Metallic springs CENTRONICS DATA COMPUTER CORP 31 Oct 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 50130/72 Heading F2S [Also in Divisions B6 and H1] A solenoid assembly (see Division H1), e.g. for a dot matrix impact printer, comprises a cylindrical case 11 threaded at one end 11c to receive a closure 23 and contains a solenoid coil 17 around an internal stem 12c. A print wire 15 reciprocates in a force-fitted lubricated guide 14 and its inner end is secured within the axial bore 18a of a cylindrical solenoid armature 18 which is shouldered for fastening at 21 to a circular spring 19 which rests upon spacer 22 resting on shoulder 11b; the armature and spring are retained by the threaded closure 23 having a central projection 23b, bearing on fastening 21. The closure is screwdriver-slotted for adjusting preloading of spring 19, after which it is sealable by epoxy resin. The preloading may be measured by a probe inserted through an axial opening 23c of the closure. The spring 19 (Fig. 2) may comprise a flat disc of sheet steel whose central portion 19a has an opening 19b to receive the armature and whose periphery 19c engages spacer 22. A pair of interleaved involute spiral slots are cut in the disc, with their inner and outer ends opposed along diameters D1, D2, and the spring is equivalent to an elongated leaf spring wound into spiral form, to have a nonlinear force deflection characteristic (Fig. 2a, not shown). Alternatively (Fig. 3, not shown), the slots may be Archimedean spirals. Normally, the spring holds the print wire in disengagement when the solenoid is de-energized, and on energization the print wire is moved to impact position against the spring force. On de-energization, the print wire is rapidly restored without bounce or overshoot. Specifications 1,338,009, 1,365,395 and U.S.A. Specification 3,703,949 are referred to.
