Abstract

1365091 Ferric chloride; hydrochloric acid from pickle liquor NEW CANADIAN PROCESSES Ltd 14 July 1971 33104/71 Heading C1A Ferric chloride is produced by intimately intermingling a liquid aqueous solution of ferrous chloride and free oxygen at at least 175‹ F. at superatmospheric pressure said pressure being at least high enough to maintain a liquid reaction medium throughout the process. The ferrous chloride solution may contain finely divided iron oxide particles and may be or be derived from waste HCl pickle liquor (WPL). The WPL may be concentrated by evaporation of a substantial amount of its water content before the intermingling. The product ferric chloride solution may be heated (e.g. by injecting hot gases into the solution) at 250‹ to 400‹ F., preferably at subatmospheric pressure, to produce an overhead stream of water vapour and HCl gas and an aqueous slurry of iron oxide. Before being heated the ferric chloride solution may be cooled to precipitate ferrous chloride therefrom. The Specification refers to Specifications 1,365,092 and 1,365,093 which respectively describe and claim methods for producing hydrochloric acid from ferric chloride solutions and for producing ferric chloride solutions using promoter cations.
