Abstract

1364736 Polymers from aromatic carboxylic acids FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 22 Oct 1971 [23 Oct 1970 15 Dec 1970 16 Dec 1970 (2)] 49316/71 Heading C3R [Also in Division B6] A polymer for use in colour-developer compositions is obtained by reacting an aromatic carboxylic acid or anhydride with an aldehyde or acetylene, reacting the product with an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate to obtain the alkali metal salt of the polymer and then reacting this with a water-soluble metal salt in a solvent to obtain a metal salt (other than an alkali metal salt) of the polymer. The colourdeveloper polymer is mixed with other materials, e.g. solvents, binders, inorganic pigments and carboxylic acids or their metallic salts as stabilizers, and coated on supports, e.g. sheets of paper. Coloured images are obtained by contacting the sheets coated with the colour-developer composition with sheets coated with microcapsules of colour-former and applying pressure or heat. In examples polymers are obtained by condensing formaldehyde with salicylic acid and with 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid, the condensates are reacted with sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide and the sodium and potassium salts so obtained are reacted with zinc sulphate, tin sulphate, nickel sulphate, copper sulphate, zinc chloride, tin chloride, manganese chloride, aluminium sulphate and lead sulphate to obtain the polymers of the invention; compositions are prepared from these polymers and coated on paper to form colour-developer sheets, the other materials in the compositions being water, ethanol, toluene, petroleum naphtha, butyl acetate, methoxy ethanol and benzene as solvents, gum arabic, wheat starch, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, ethyl cellulose, gelatine, styrene-butadiene copolymers and nitrocellulose as binders, titanium dioxide, aluminium silicate, magnesium carbonate, kaolin, zeolite, talc, bentonite and zinc silicate as pigments and caprylic acid, sodium oleate, chlorostearic acid, zinc stearate, sodium salicylate, stearic acid, benzoic acid, lauric acid, sodium behenate, salicylic acid, oleic acid, dodecan-1,12-dicarboxylic acid, p-chloro-benzoic acid and p-isopropyl-benzoic acid as stabilizers; colour is formed by placing the developer sheets on paper coated with microcapsules of the colour-formers Crystal Violet Lactone and 3-dibenzylamino-7-diethylamino, fluorane and applying pressure.
