Abstract

1364452 Finishing IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 1 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 52943/70 Addition to 1175208 Headings D1B and DIP A finishing agent e.g. a dye, optical brightener, shrink or crease resist agent, antistatic agent or a water, dirt, oil or stain repellant is applied to a substrate, as a solution, dispersion or emulsion in an organic solvent and the solvent subsequently removed as described in Specification 1175208 and the substrate then treated with superheated steam or with the vapour of an organic solvent (preferably the same solvent as is used to apply the finishing agent) at a temperature equal to or greater than the boiling point of the solvent. Specified solvents are perchlorethylene 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane, methylene chloride, 1, 1, 2-trichloro-1, 2, 2-trifluoroethane and trichloroethylene. The substrate may be paper or a textile material in the form of fibres, yarn, woven knitted or felted fabrics polyester of wool cotton or regenerated cellulose. The super heated steam or solvent vapour may be heated by electric or infra-red heaters present within the treatment vessel. If treatment is carried out in a single vessel with a baffle between the two treatment chambers a flow of steam or solvent vapour is created from the high temperature chamber to the low temperature chamber. The steam used may be under pressure. Specified treating agents are alkoxylated propylene urea resins and melamine resins as crease resist agents, a terpolymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and methacryloyl chloride for shrink-proofing wool, fluorinated polymers, methylolamides of fatty acids, and silicone polymers for imparting water, oil and dirt repellancy.
