Abstract

1364063 Disinfecting and deodorising toilets UNI-HYGEA Ltd 3 Aug 1972 [5 Aug 1971 15 Oct 1971] 36741/71 and 48003/71 Heading E1C . Apparatus for simultaneously adding a disinfectant to the water in a toilet cistern and spraying a de-odorant into the air comprises a variable volume chamber, e.g. a bellows 6, which is connected by a pipe to an air trap vessel (100, Fig. 3, not shown) or equivalent device in a toilet cistern, such that a rise in water level in the cistern increases the volume of the chamber 6 against the restoring force of a suspended weight 45 or a spring, and a fluid-dispensing pump 10 which is operated by the weight or spring, when the water level descends, through a lost-motion device, to supply disinfectant fluid from a container 8 to the cistern. The movement of the bellows may also actuate a metering valve 82 of an aerosol container 80 containing spray de-odorant. The operating mechanism comprises a pair of vertical bars 44 which straddle the pump 10 and pass through a central aperture in the bellows, which are of annular form, to connect the weight 45 with a sleeve 46, which rests on the bellows, by way of a latching lever 70 pivoted on the sleeve at 68 and having a pin 74 at its lower end normally engaged in a notch 70a in a slot 70 formed in each of the bars. A lost-motion connection in the form of a pin 48 and slot 50 connects the bars 44 to a piston rod 36 carrying a piston 34 working in a cylinder 18 surrounded by a casing 14 which is in two parts, the lower of which carries a spring-loaded delivery valve 22. Reciprocation of piston 34 alternately creates a vacuum until part 40 is uncovered to suck in disinfectant fluid from annular chamber 18, which connects with the container 8 via port 20, and forces the fluid past valve 22 to delivery port 28, which is connected by a pipe 30 (Fig. 3, not shown) to the cistern. This reciprocation is effected as follows: first, the bellows rise to the position of Fig. 2 on filling of the cistern, at which position a notch 64 in each of the bars 44 is engaged by a spring-loaded latching pin 58 to retain the bars in raised position. Then, during flushing of the toilet, the bellows fall, causing pin 74 to disengage the notch 70a in each bar 44 and ride along cam surface 70b for distance sufficient to cause, the upper end of the latching lever 70 to disengage the pin 58, whereupon the bars 44 fall until the pin 74 re-engages the notch 70a, the momentum thus obtained being further increased by the lost-motion connection 48, 50 until piston 34 is driven whereby a shot of disinfectant fluid is delivered towards the end of the flush. At the same time, by the engagement of projecting ends 54a of a pin 54 with free ends 90a of pivoted arms 90, these arms are depressed to operate the metering valve 82 to spray a predetermined quantity of de-odorant into the room from aerosol container 80.
