Abstract

1363697 Machine vices F ARNOLD 23 Nov 1971 [10 Dec 1970] 54444/71 Heading B3B In a mechanical clamping device such as a machine vice having a base portion 1 with a fixed jaw 2 and a displaceable jaw 10 carried on a slide 8, the slide is actuated by a hollow threaded spindle 5 which has a pressure amplifying mechanism. This mechanism is formed in an extension concentric with the screw spindle 5 and includes a push-rod 11 coaxial with the spindle 5 and engaging the jaw region 10 of the slide 8 and which is actuated by a tapered pressure bolt 26 by way of a driving spindle 13 through a clutch mechanism 21, 22, and which displaces angularly spaced concentric toggle levers 31 to apply additional pressure to the jaws of the vice, each toggle lever including three balls, a centre ball 28 and two end balls 29 with two arms 31 therebetween. In operation a hand lever 18 is rotated wihich rotates the spindle 5 and the amplifying mechanism 5a, 5b and 16 until the workpiece 20 is firmly gripped between the vice jaws 2 and 10. Further rotation of the handle 18 causes rotation of the driving spindle 13, disconnection of the clutch members 21, 22 and axial displacement of the driving spindle to abut the pressure bolt 26 which is subsequently displaced axially whereby its tapered end radially displaces the centre balls 28 of the toggle linkage 31. Since one end of the linkage 31 seats against a fixed member 32 and the other against a seating flange on the push-rod 11 the rod is displaced coaxially of the screw 5 to increase the load of the jaws on the workpiece 20.
