Abstract
1363410 Citric acid CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 16 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 23029/72 Heading C2C Citric acid is produced by oxidizing 3-methylene-1,5-pentanediol or the mono-acetate or diacetate or cyclic formylal thereof by nitration with NO 2 (e.g. in HNO 3 ) e.g. at - 10‹ to + 30‹ C. and thereafter reacting the nitration product with HNO 3 at elevated temperature, e.g. 30- 120‹ C. This latter step may be effected in aqueous or organic acid medium in which the HNO 3 is present in a concentration of 30-90 weight per cent. The citric acid may be recovered in the form of a salt or ester there of.
