Abstract
1362980 Producing lead-containing steels STEIRISCHE GUSSSTAHLWERKE A G 29 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970 60482/71 Heading C7D Plumbiferous steels are produced by introducing lead and/or lead compounds in particulate form into molten steel, the specific gravity of fraction of the particles being greater than that of the melt, while the specific gravity of another fraction of the particles is less than or equal to that of the melt, thus assuring an optimum distribution of lead through the steel. Generally the more dense particles include lead shot, lead alloys and/or lead oxides while the less dense particles may be lead sulphide or sulphide ores, lead carbonate and/ or lead sulphate, but other oxygen-containing compounds or halides may also be employed, the necessary reduction or thermal decomposition rations taking place in the melt. If lead ores are used they may be in the form of agglomerated flotation or sedimentation concentrates. The process is applicable to continuous casting or to casting in a static mould; if continuous the particles may be incorporated in the casting stream.
