Abstract

1362899 Collapsible steering column VOLVO AB 19 Sept 1972 43321/72 Heading B7H A collapsible steering assembly includes a steering shaft formed in two sections 15, 17, the upper shaft section 15 being axially movable between a first steering position (as shown) and a second, safe position in which the steering wheel 16 is remote from the driver, e.g. located in a recess 12 in the dashboard; latching means for releasably holding the upper section 15 in its first position; and means sensitive to vehicle retardation forces for releasing said latching means when said vehicle retardation forces exceed a predetermined magnitude (e.g. in the event of a collision) to permit free movement of the upper section 15 to its second safe position. As described the sections 15 and 17 are arranged telescopically with a splined connection and a sleeve 30 is arranged about the upper section 15 so that it is movable axially therewith but is prevented from rotating. The upper section 15 is held in its first position by a latch element 19 which engages an abutment 32 fixed to the end of sleeve 30 and the latch element 19 is held in its latching position by a toggle mechanism 22 consisting of levers 25, 27, the lever 25 carrying a weight 28. In the event of a collision the inertia of weight 28 "breaks" the toggle mechanism 22 to allow the latch element 19 to pivot anti-clockwise, thus releasing the sleeve 30 and upper shaft section 15. The sleeve 30 and shaft 15 then move to their second, safe positions, either by gravity and inertia, and/or by means of a compression spring 33. The sleeve 30 is prevented from rebounding from its safe position by a resilient wedge shaped collar 38 located in a conical opening in an abutment 34.
