Abstract

1362538 Tubular heat exchangers; water heaters A J PAVELEY and G M HAWKLEY 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46589/71 Headings F4S and F4A In a hot-water supply system comprising a plurality of heat exchangers disposed within a single housing 21, primary heated water from a common supply pipe 2 is distributed via waterways 3 to the respective heat exchangers wherein it is constrained to flow over finned tubes through which secondary water to be heated is passed in countercurrent relationship. Each finned tube comprises a central straight portion 5 and a coiled portion 9 disposed between an inner sleeve 6 and an open-topped casing 8. The primary water on leaving the open-topped casing 8 at 10 enters the surrounding housing 21 from whence it is returned via an outlet 22 to a boiler to be reheated and then recirculated to the supply pipe 2. Secondary water is supplied via a pipe 12 to an annular manifold 13 from whence it is distributed via connectors 14 and pipes 11 to the respective heat exchangers, heated secondary water being returned via pipes 17 to an annular collection manifold 16 concentrically surrounding the manifold 13 to be discharged through a delivery pipe 18. To avoid water in the delivery pipe 18 attaining an excessive temperature a thermostatic induction valve (19, Fig. 6, not shown) can be connected between the pipes 12 and 18, whereby when the temperature of water in pipe 18 exceeds a predetermined value water is drawn directly from the inlet pipe 12 to pipe 18 by means of a Venturi (30). In an alternative arrangement (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown) a housing (21) containing a plurality of heat exchangers is connected in series with a pair of housings (21) which do not contain heat exchangers.
