Abstract

1362381 Spring units; linkwork G J VAN DER BURGT J'r HART and H SCHRIER 30 June 1971 [7 July 1970 (2)] 30709/71 Headings F2K and F2S A system for receiving a load L comprises a lever 2 pivoted at 4 to a supporting structure, e.g. a frame 5, a compression spring 3 acting between the lever 2 and the supporting structure, and adjusting means 9, 10 operable to vary simultaneously the operative distance b from the pivot 4 at which the spring 3 acts on the lever 2, and the force exerted by the spring 3, this spring force increasing as the distance b is increased if the lever is in the same position relative to the support structure after adjustment as it was before; and a second (bell crank) lever 20, 21, (with a fulcrum 7 on the adjusting means 9, 10) for transmitting the spring force to the lever 2. A compression counter-spring 17, Fig. 1, may be used to balance the force of the spring 3 on the adjusting means 9, 10 and a roller 8 supports the lever arm 21 on the lever 2. In a modification, instead of the adjustment being by handle, 10, it is performed by a motor under the control of a sensor for detecting the position of the lever 2. The fulcrum 7 is on a further lever pivoted on the support frame 5 in a manner like that indicated in Fig. 5 but with a different connection to adjusting means. In another modification, instead of roller 8, a sleeve slides on the lever 2 to support the bell crank arm 21 and a pivoted arm rockable between stops on the adjusting means connects these means to the fulcrum on the bell crank lever. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the fulcrum 7 is on a further lever 13 similar to that of the first modification but connected, in this case, to the adjusting means 9, 10 by a link 18. The tension counter-spring 17 balances the spring 3 in this modification.
