Abstract

1361858 Sewing machine thread cutters SINGER CO 27 July 1971 35165/71 Heading D1G [Also in Division B4] A thread cutter 30 for a sewing machine has a rocking knife 43 which, as it rocks in a body 31, opens and closes a passageway 80 between an air and thread inlet chamber 60 and an outlet chamber 67 from which the air and thread is sucked through a conduit 71 connected to a source of negative air pressure. A ledger blade 81 and a spacer 84 are attached to one arm 33 of the body, and a bushing 40 holds a bow spring 42 against the knife 43, so that the knife and ledger blade co-operate in scissors fashion to sever a thread extending through the passageway 80. The thread cutter drive shaft 38, which has a key section 39 to drive the knife 43, is oscillated by a rock arm 48 which has a slot 51 embracing a slide block 52 on the driving pitman 21 operated by an eccentric 23 on the machine shaft 22. The thread cutter is enclosed within a housing 64 by cover plate 68. Eccentrics 23 and 29, also driven by the machine shaft 22 lift the knife and feed dog 16 simultaneously so that the air flow is interrupted as the work is fed forward to prevent the cutter from interfering with the transport of the work fabric.
