Abstract

1361674 Purification of sugar juice DE DANSKE SUKKERFABRIKKER AS 18 April 1972 [23 April 1971] 11211/71 Heading B1X [Also in Divisions A2 and C6] Sugar juice from cane or beet is purified and clarified by a process which consists in the steps of (a) mechanically separating insoluble contaminants from the juice, e.g. by filtration or centrifuging, (b) subjecting the juice to ultrafiltration with a semi-permeable membrane which passes water and sugar molecules, (c) adding water to the residue from (b) and subjecting it to further ultrafiltration, and (d) subjecting the combined permeates from (b) and (c) to purification by one or more of: chemical treatment, filtration, ion exchange, electrodialysis, reverse osmosis. The ultrafiltration step may be repeated more than once. The pH value of the juice is preferably adjusted to a value of from 6 to 11.5 before the first ultrafiltration, e.g. by addition of calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide, or calcium carbonate. In one example, a semi-permeable membrane is made from a solution consisting of 20% by weight cellulose, 39.5% formamide, 40% acetone and 0.5% methyl cellulose, and the ultrafiltration is carried out at a pressure of 20 atmospheres.
