Abstract
1361302 Hydrogen iodide MONSANTO CO 9 Feb 1972 [1 Sept 1971 (2)] 6012/72 Heading C1A Hydrogen iodide is produced by reacting iodine with water and carbon monoxide at 75‹ C. or higher and at a pressure of 25 to 500 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a mineral acid and in the presence of a rhodium- or iridium-containing catalyst. The reaction may be in the vapour phase in a reaction medium containing the acid in solution. The acid may be HI with the proportion of water in the HI solution maintained above 43% by weight. Other acids mentioned are HBr, HCl, H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 . Preferably the CO is maintained at a partial pressure of 5 to 300 p.s.i.a. The catalyst may be the product of a reaction between rhodium, iridium or a compound of rhodium or iridium with iodine or a compound of iodine, in the presence of CO. The catalyst may be formed in situ.
