Abstract
1360590 Pulse-echo cable testing systems HOWALOTSWERKE-DEUTSCHE WERFT AG HAMBURG UND KEIL 29 Dec 1972 [11 Jan 1972] 60012/72 Heading H4D A method of locating a cable fault comprises producing a continuously burning arc at the fault so that pulses from a measuring instrument encounter a sufficiently large reflection factor at the fault. A.C. is applied at 2-3 and the voltage at the secondary of transformer 1 is rectified by diode 4. The resulting voltage is applied to cable 8 via resistor 5 and an inductor 6. An arc is formed at fault location 9 causing a collapse in voltage. The resulting travelling wave passes capacitor 10, transformer 11 and dissipated in resistor 13. If the voltage is very high a spark gap 12 responds to protect the transformer. Once the arc is struck and stabilized instrument 14 may be used to determine the fault location by using a pulse echo technique.
