Abstract

1360469 Detecting power cable faults BOWDEN BROS Ltd 4 Dec 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 56017/71 Headings G1N and G1U Faults in an overhead power line are detected by sensing any significant change in the ground level magnetic field. Fig. 1 shows the system in outline; a ferrite cored winding 1 responds to changes in the field, and its signal is amplified at 2 and fed via a sensitivity potentiometer 3 to a bi-stable switch 4. When a test switch 8 is manually pressed, either a green or a red light is illuminated depending on the state of the bistable switch. A further manual switch 9 allows the red light to be tested. In use the system is placed on the ground when the power line is functioning normally; if switch 8 is pressed the green light operates. If there is a subsequent field change of magnitude sufficient to operate the bi-stable switch, the red light will operate when switch 8 is pressed. The bi-stable switch may be a flip-flop, Fig. 3 (not shown) or an SCR Fig. 4 (not shown). A delay is preferably built into the system to avoid switching by transients. The bi-stable switch may be automatically reset when the original field is restored by correcting the fault.
