Abstract
1360433 Treating I C engine exhaust ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 21 July 1971 [24 Aug 1970] 34165/71 Heading F1B An exhaust gas reactor comprises opposed circular end-walls 41, 42, Fig. 2 and a peripheral wall 21 which define a circular reaction chamber, an inner wall dividing the reaction chamber into an outer annular chamber and an inner circular chamber which communicates directly with an exhaust outlet 43, an exhaust inlet 23 directing exhaust tangentially to the peripheral wall and an aperture in the inner wall being so located that some of the exhaust gas will circulate past the inner wall aperture to mix with exhaust gas entering the outer chamber. In operation additional air from manifold 30, Fig. 1 is introduced through lines 32, 35 into the exhaust gases flowing to the torus. Inlet manifold vacuum holds valve 82 open to permit exhaust gas recycling through a line 84 which includes a cooler 85. At intermediate positions of throttle valve 73 a valve 86 seals a line 87 to prevent air bleed to valve 82 which would close the latter. With a fully open throttle, valve 86 is in the full-line position permitting air to bleed through port 88 to prevent vacuum on valve 88 which is thus closed to prevent any exhaust gas recycling. Recycling is also prevented when throttle 73 is closed or choke valve 72 is closed. In order to prevent excessive temperatures in reactor 21 at high speeds pressure upstream of muffler 50 is transmitted to diaphragm valve 101 which diverts air from the pump 31 to the inlet line thereby leaning-out the mixture. Air, heated by the reactor, is drawn through coil 106 causing opening of choke valve 72 to lean-out the mixture to reduce reactor temperatures in modes other than high speed. The exhaust gas inlets to the torus includes flameholders 60, 61, 62, Fig. 2.
