Abstract
1360131 Polyurethane foams BAYER AG 2 March 1972 [3 March 1971] 9734/72 Heading C3R Non-flammable, soft-elastic polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting, in a one-shot process, distilled tolylene diisocyanate which is free from polymeric isocyanates with a polyether having at least two OH groups and a M.W. of 1500 to 10,000, at least 10% by weight of whose OH groups are primary OH groups, and a cross-linking or chain-extending agent of M.W. 62 to 1500 in the presence of water and optionally an organic expanding agent and a catalyst for urethane formation, the reaction being carried out in the absence of polyether/polysiloxane foam stabilizers. Commercial isomers of tolylene diisocyanate or pure 2,4- or 2,6- tolylene diisocyanate preferably may be used. All the polyethers are preferably synthesized using ethylene oxide to introduce the primary OH groups. Suitable cross-linking or chainextending agents include aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic glycols, aminoalcohols or polyamines. Emulsifiers may also be included in the reaction mixture. In a typical example polyurethane foams are prepared from a reaction mixture comprising a polyether derived from propylene glycol, propylene oxide and ethylene oxide, water, triethylene diamine, 1,4- butane diol and a mixture of the 2,4- and 2,6- isomers of tolylene diisocyanate.
