Abstract
1360014 Grinding BENDIX CORP 21 June 1971 [22 June 1970] 29029/71 Heading B3D An internally lubricated grinding wheel arrangement comprises a relatively porous grinding wheel member 52, means mounting the member for rotation and advancement into a workpiece, means for supplying a lubricating liquid to the wheel member to produce outward irrigation of the liquid through the wheel member voids and including a circumferentially extending internal chamber 80 and means 76, 78 directing the liquid into the chamber, and cooling means 104, 106 for directing a coolant supply externally of the wheel member to the grinding zone whereby the grinding wheel member is lubricated by internal liquid flow while being cooled by external liquid flow. The grinding wheel member 52 is clamped between hub members 54, 56, the member 56 being formed on an annular part secured to a drum 94 supported by bearings 96, 98 on a stub shaft 90 and provided with a pulley 100 for a belt drive. The grinding member 52 is spaced from the annular member to form the chamber 80, and each of the hub members 54, 56 has an oil ring 68, 70 provided with pockets 72, 74 supplied with lubricant from tubes 82, 84, the lubricant in the pockets passing through passages 76, 78 having metering orifices 79, 81 to the chamber 80. From the chamber, the lubricant migrates under centrifugal force through the voids in the grinding wheel to its external surface. Coolant is supplied to the surface of the wheel from nozzles 104.
