Abstract

1360011 Knobs SHINBURGH Ltd 11 April 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 4584/71 Heading A4U [Also in Division B6] A knob e.g. for a gear lever comprises a moulded cone 1 of high density polythene having end-faces 2, 3 each provided with a circular fixing channel 5, 6 in which the inturned ends 8b, 8c, of a tubular, leather sheath 8 are secured by metal fixing rings 9, 10 press-fitted into the channels, the end-face 3 having a stepped bore 4, for attachment to gear levers of different cross-sections, and the end-face 2 being recessed to receive an ornamental disc 11 of moulded plastics which is adhered to the face. The tubular sheath, formed by seaming a sheet of leather and presented to one end of the knob outside-in with the outer finished surface on the inside, is rolled on to the cone towards the recessed end, the cone having a V-shaped recess 7 to accommodate the seam 8a. In a modification, the ornamental disc 11 is formed integrally with the fixing ring 9 and is retained by friction between the ring and the side walls of the recessed face 2 without the use of adhesive.
