Abstract
1359595 Bearing alloys; cleaning Al alloy; coating with metals VANDERVELL PRODUCTS Ltd 28 Feb 1973 [29 Feb 1972] 9399/72 Headings C7A C7E and C7F [Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A bearing block of cast aluminium alloy may be coated with a layer of bearing material. The block is degreased in trichloroethylene vapour and immersed for 3 minutes in a solution containing 10-15 g/l Na 2 CO 3 and 10-15 g/l Na 3 PO 4 at 90‹ C. After rinsing the block is immersed for about 1/2 minute in a solution of 3 parts nitricacid (SG 1À42) and 1 part hydrochloric acid (40%) at room temperature. After rinsing the block is masked except for the bearing surfaces by applying a lacquer to the parts which are not to be coated, dipping in molten wax, and stripping the wax from the bearing surfaces. The surfaces are coated with zinc by immersing the block in a solution containing 500 g/l NaOH, 100 g/l ZnO, 1 g/l FeCl 3 , 5 g/l Rochelle salt at room temperature. The block is rinsed, dipped in conc. nitric acid to remove the zinc coating, rinsed and reimmersed in the sodium zincate solution. The zinc surface may be coated with copper by electro-plating and the copper coated with tin. A layer of lead or tin based babbitt is then cast to form the bearing surface. Suitable alloys for casting as the bearing material comprise 1 to 10% Sn; 10 to 15% Sb; 0 to 1% As; 0 to 0À9% Cu; 0 to 0À5% Cd the balance being Pb. Alternatively the alloy may have 7À5% Sb; 3À25% Cu, the balance being Sn. In an alternative method of making the bearing block a mixture of alloys of aluminium and lead are cast together in such a way that the lead alloy tends to be concentrated at the bearing surface. Suitable lead alloys comprise 1 to 13% Sn; 10 to 15% Sb; 0 to 0À5% As; 0 to 0À9% Cu; 0 to 0À5% Cd the balance being lead. Alternatively the block may be made of an aluminium alloy having good bearing properties and a thermal conductivity greater than 0À2 cal. sec<SP>-1</SP>. em<SP>-3</SP>. ‹C<SP>-1</SP>. Such alloys comprise aluminium and 5À5 to 7À0% Sn; 0À7 to 1À3% each Cu and Ni; up to 0À7% each Si and Fe; up to 0À1% Mn and up to 0À2% Ti, or aluminium and 18 to 22% Sn; 1 to 1À5% Cu; up to 0À5% Fe; up to 0À3% Si; or aluminium and 4% Si and 1% Cd; or aluminium and 6 to 8% Si, 1À5 to 2À5% Cu, up to 0À3% Mg, up to 0À8% Fe, 0À2 to 0À6% Mn.
