Abstract

1359531 Electro-medical apparatus HB WHEELER 23 Sept 1971 [24 Sept 1970] 44693/71 Heading G1N Physiological conditions associated with blood volume changes are detected by determining the change in impedance of a body section occurring when venous return to the heart is temporarily blocked. In this manner venous occlusions and internal haemorrhages may be detected. Also, the blood flow-rate can be determined by dividing the change in impedance by the time over which the change occurs. As shown, for detecting venous occlusions in a leg a pair of current source electrodes 12 and a pair of voltage pick-up electrodes 14 are attached to the leg. Figs. 1a, 1b (not shown), and voltages E 1 , E 2 corresponding to the pick-up voltage and the energizing current are applied to a display (recorder, CRO) 46, a phase sensitive detector 48 and transformer primary windings 70a, 70b. The body impedance is first determined in a normal condition and its value is stored at 54 by closing switch 52a momentarily. The venous return to the heart is then temporarily blocked, e.g. by deep inspiration, expiration against a predetermined resistance or external pressure of a cuff, and the body impedance is stored at 56 by closing switch 56 momentarily. An amplifier 58 provides an output proportional to the difference between these impedance values. This output is applied via switch 60, to an amplifier 62, the input resistor 66 of which is variable. The transformer secondary windings 70c, 70d are arranged in a bridge circuit with resistor 74 and adjustable resistor 76, the bridge being rebalanced via motor 82 which adjusts resistor 76 and resistor 66. Thus resistor 66 has a value directly proportional to the normal impedance of the body section and thus the output of amplifier 62 is proportional to the ratio of the impedance difference to the normal impedance. This can be displayed as a percentage on a digital indicator 68 and an alarm may be provided if this percentage change is less than a pre-set value, preferably 0À2%, thus indicating a venous occlusion. As an alternative the impedance difference may be related to the body volume between the measuring electrodes.
